Big Dent

BigDent is the microfinance program of CMF International,a Christian missions organization that West Side partners with in our adopted community in Nairobi, Kenya.

“BigDent offers you the opportunity to sponsor a loan for a budding entrepreneur by business, gender, or loan amount.

Your contribution of any size will be used to provide initial loans for new graduates of the business training program. Entrepreneurs must make regular payments on the loan, beginning the first week, until it is repaid in full.

As loans are repaid, those funds are re-directed to new entrepreneurs or proven entrepreneurs who are expanding their businesses. In other words, your contribution does not cease working after given the first time; it is “recycled” into new loans, creating a bigger dent into poverty.

You can also give toward the General Fund. Each month a new class of graduates is ready for their first loans. The General Fund provides funds for trained individuals who are not yet sponsored. So, your general/undesignated contribution is of great value to the ongoing loan process.”

Short-term Trip…Long-term Impact

August 25th, 2011 by Missions Team

Below is a story from Deb Knoles who has been on several of the trips through West Side to Mexico City to visit an orphanage in Mexico called Ninos de Mexico. It’s a story that chronicles how God canuse a short-term trip to bring long-term impactinto our lives.

IMG_0359

“I first met Elvis in 2006 when I was part of a team from West Side that went to work at NDM for a week. The mission’s main focus is operating four different homes that offer a refuge for children who have been either abandoned or removed from abusive situations. I noticed Elvis partly because he was one half of identical twin brothers, but mostly because he wore a green shirt that declared: Not by might, nor by power, but by my Spirit, says the Lord Almighty (Zach. 4:6). That verse had been cropping up in my own Bible studies as I considered God’s power to work in spite of my limitations. Elvis didn’t say much…his gregarious twin enjoyed speaking for both of them. But the t-shirt intrigued me. Did he believe those words he wore?

My husband, Warren, and I had decided that while I was at NDM, I’d choose a boy and a girl to sponsor. I promptly fell in love with all the kids and wondered how I could pick JUST two! But the staff assured me that every dime I sent to help ONE child would help ALL of the children. I was still trying to decide on a boy by the last day of our trip. As we waited for the van to come take us to the airport, Elvis began talking to my friend and me about the lesson he would be teaching the 5th graders the next day at church. The Bible passage was “Honor your father and mother in the Lord.” By then I knew that he’d run away from home at ten years of age because of severe abuse. How, I wondered, could this teenager teach about honoring fathers when his own would likely have killed him? He must have read my face because he said, “I will tell them to follow the Bible, to practice hard so that they can have good families.” He grinned. “NOT like mine.” Then sobering, he added, “I will practice hard, too. I want to be a missionary someday.” I looked at his face and saw the answer to my question…the t-shirt might have been one that he got randomly from a donation, but he believed in God’s power to transform, to easily do what is impossible for man. We began sponsoring him.

Three years later, I was back with another group visiting the home where Elvis lives. He’d already thanked me repeatedly for sponsoring him and kept adding, “Please thank Warren for me!” We’d exchanged letters and pictures over the years and had a bit more to talk about. As we were about ready to leave, he asked me the question…would I be his family at graduation? It felt like a knife went through my heart. For $25 a month and a few letters, I was being invited to be part of what would be a hugely significant day in his young life. I knew that nothing I had done for Elvis was deserving of the honor he was giving me. Somehow, God had managed to pour out His own love for Elvis through two flawed people who lived a world away from Mexico. “Not by might, nor by power, but by His Spirit.” I looked back into those eyes through the tears in mine and promised, “If God allows me to, I will come!”

In June of this year, I returned to NDM with a group from West Side. I’d tried to schedule our trip to be there during graduation, but when that wasn’t possible, I made plans to come back in July with a group of sponsors to attend the graduation. Our mission week was great! He surprised me by giving me a picture of the two of us from my last trip which he’d enlarged, hand-matted and framed for me. Like my own son, he sure knows how to bring out the “good tears”! I was so grateful that I could tell him that I would be returning in July for his graduation party and that Warren would be able to come with me. He was very excited about getting to meet Warren.

Introducing Elvis and Warren ranks as one of my favorite moments of any trip to Mexico. Without them ever exchanging a spoken word, God’s mighty, limitless Spirit had formed a bond between them. The next two days, we enjoyed helping set up the graduation celebration that took place on Tuesday evening. The 13 graduates were very impressive as they thanked their sponsors, the teachers, staff and their brothers and sisters of the large Ninos family. It was difficult to imagine that these articulate, confident young men and women had taken such a hard road to the success they were now enjoying…more evidence of God’s mighty Spirit transforming lives! Speeches, the presentation of diplomas and then there was lots of food, wonderful music from a mariachi band and even some tasteful but extremely joyful dancing. Fiesta!

I’ve seen ads that say “you can change a child’s life for __ dollars a month”. Certainly, it is good to provide needed resources to a child. But sponsoring has changed OUR lives. We have a new appreciation for the power of God’s Spirit. The words on that t-shirt were not just words; they are God’s eternal truth. What a privilege to see them lived out in the life of one very amazing young man!”

Dear All,

I would like toaskyou to pray for our daughter Cherry Nemneithem. She is almost 12 months old. She has beensick since Saturday night (July 10, 2011). Her fever was above 102 deg F. We gave her medicineprescribed by the Pediatrician and it reduced her fever for for a few hours.

The temperature rose again on Sunday. We took her to the clinic at 2:30 pm and her temperature was 101.2 deg F. The three in-charged medical doctors checked Cherry and gave a prescription.

Cherry was fine last night. But her fever rose againat midnight. Her fever was almost 103 deg. F at 1:45 am. We gave her the medicine and reduced her fever with a wet towel. She is able to sleep now.

Many have asked how much West Side has sent to help the relief efforts in Joplin, MO after their recent tornado. There was an offering taken up in early-June, where there was around $15,000 collected and given to IDES, the International Disaster Emergency Service to use specifically in Joplin, MO. Please continue to lift up your prayers for Joplin and the everyone who was impacted. If you would like to send an additional donation, please go directly to IDES website.

Thank you West Side for your incredible response to this huge need!

Wanna take a trip to Budapest, Hungary?

June 1st, 2011 by Missions Team

This is a letter from supported missionaries serving in Paris, Bill & Rachel Carol:

I am writing to see if you might be interested in a ministry opportunity. Every year our organization, Christian Associates, has a staff conference in Europe where they gather team members from all over the world to meet together for training, vision, prayer, worship and community. This annual staff conference in called Connect and this year itwill be held in Budapest, Hungary. This will be our 3rdtime attending a Connect conference and we are really looking forward to it. Bill & I enjoy getting refreshedand encouraged andour kids lovegetting to hang out withother kids that arejustlike them (kids from families in ministry living abroad). For parents to get the most out of the sessions and workshops, there have been teams that have come over from the states to do childcare for the children. This year the team that was scheduled to come and do childcarehad to cancel. We are quickly searching for people who might be interested in coming to serve these families in ministryby watching kids during this Connect conference. I was wondering if that might be you?

The conference is August 10-14 at a hotel/conference center outside Budapest, Hungary. There will be approximately 45 kids from 0-11 years old that would need childcare during portions of the conference. We are looking for individuals or a team of people who would be willing to play with our kids or even create a VBS-like experience for them during that time. Christian Associates would cover the hotel and meals during the conference for these volunteers. The volunteers would need to provide their own transportation toBudapest.(You can fly into Budapest orVienna to reach this hotel.)

If you think you might be interested in serving in this way, please email me back. I would love to tell you more about it.
Thanks for considering this opportunity.
Blessings to you,
Rachel & Bill

West Side Cares – Joplin, MO

May 25th, 2011 by Missions Team

You have seen the news about the huge tornado in Joplin, Missouri. Hundreds were killed and athousand are missing and many thousand are homeless after their homes were blown away. The Senior Minister at the College Heights Christian Church in Joplin said “It is beyond words. We will probably have over 70 College Heights Christian Church families with total home loss.” Matt Proctor, President of Ozark Christian College (where a number of West Side students attend) said that over a dozen college families lost their homes and, tragically, an Ozark student was killed.

None of the West Side students attending Ozark Christian were injured and the Luzadder family is also safe, but all have been impacted by the tornado and damage. Hannah Reside’s apartment was totally destroyed. Wade Beeman took supplies andhas joined a work crew assisting with the clean up. Many others are also assisting as possible.

A special offering opportunity will be available in the central concourse this Sunday. All funds received will be directed through our sister church in Joplin to be used were most needed. Please come prepared to be generous and please pray for the people in the devastated area.

The following is a letter from Rick Jett, the Director of IDES;

Subject: Joplin, MO and Recent US Storms – A Letter From Our Executive Director
IDES’ Disaster Assistance Response Teams have been dispatched to Okolona, MS and Joplin, MO, after deadly tornadoes completely destroyed Smithville, MS and nearly one-third of Joplin, MO. At least one hundred sixteen people have been confirmed killed in Joplin with the expectation of that number rising as the search and rescue teams continue their work. Thousands more have been displaced after their homes were swept away. Randy Gariss, Senior Minister at College Heights Christian Church in Joplin, said, “Rick, it is beyond words. We will probably have over 70 College Heights Christian Church families with total home loss. We have over 50 now…” Matt Proctor, President of Ozark Christian College, listed over a dozen families related to the college that have lost their homes. Tragically, one of their students was among the fatalities. There are similar needs in northern Mississippi as well.

We want to be able to partner with the Christian Church/Church of Christ congregations in these disaster areas to offer immediate relief supplies, rebuilding materials and other essentials. The need is enormous. We are thankful for the many volunteers that have volunteered their time to go to the disaster site and physically help others in Jesus name. We are grateful for others who have collected water, food and other supplies and have shipped and distributed those items. IDES is dedicated to offering help and hope to those who are suffering from catastrophic events be it overseas or here in the United States of America. It is only because of generous and caring friends like you that we are able to meet the urgent needs of the tornado survivors in Mississippi and Missouri.

Please join us in prayer for the survivors, the relief workers, and the grieving families impacted by these historic tornadoes. And please give today to help IDES help our brothers and sisters in Christ to reach out and help their neighbors with the love and compassion of Christ. Click the link below to donate online.
