Return to West Side Christian Church

Off to Indonesia!

September 7th, 2010 by Missions Team

Missions chairman Steve Stewart is en-route to Indonesia for 16 days to visit with local churches planted by APCMI (Asia Pacific Christian Mission International). Please lift up Steve and the two other men that are traveling with him. If you would like to read about more stories and stay updated with their journey you can read the team’s blog here. There is also more information about APCMI on this blog, it is an organization that West Side supports. With the team’s visit there will hopefully be renewed encouragement for their ministry and a stronger relationship between West Side and APCMI.

Thank you for your prayers and thoughts for Steve as he makes this long distance trek!

New Church building in Myanmar

August 9th, 2010 by Missions Team

Many West-siders met Palal and his family from Myanmar while they were living in the States. Palal is hard at work in Myanmar, leading the Hope Boarding School in Yangon, preaching, and strengthening the churches of northwest Myanmar. One of those churches, Tamu Christian Church, has never had a meeting place of their own – they would usually meet in the minister’s small house, or elsewhere. West Side recently provided the funds to purchase materials to construct a new building. What a great blessing for the Myanmar Christians! Now they not only have adequate space for church meetings, but since Tamu is centrally located among the towns and villages, the new building will double as a regional training center and meeting location. The attached photos show how much can be accomplished in Myanmar with just a few US dollars and the hard work of local Believers!

Here is a picture of the church meeting in the minister’s house:

Cookson Hills Trip

July 23rd, 2010 by Missions Team

Cookson hills teamSummer is certainly a busy time for short-time mission trips! There was a team of people who left for Oklahoma to help with a children’s home. Tami Schroeder, the trip leader sent us a short summary of their trip.

“On July 5, five adults and two teenagers set out for a mission trip to Cookson Hills Christian Ministries in Kansas, Oklahoma.  Cookson Hills is a ministry that helps children who are struggling.   After a tour of Cookson, we ate supper with one of the families.  It was great getting to know some of the Cookson Hills kids.  On Tuesday through Thursday, we completed various tasks in order to serve and help the people at Cookson.  The men and teenage boys helped prepare the grounds for Wilderness Camp.  They also helped organize the tool shop.    The ladies cleaned coolers, made pizza, cookies, brownies, and lemon bars.  We also cleaned the dining hall and a house.  On Wednesday evening, we went into Siloam Springs, Arkansas, to purchase items for the kids at Cookson.  Some of the items will be used at the Wilderness Camp. We learned much about the operation of Cookson and the ways they help children and teenagers who need the Lord. We also enjoyed a time of devotion and prayer each day with the Mission team.  We came home on Friday with joy in our hearts knowing that we served the Lord.”

If this trip sounds appealing to you be sure to keep it in mind for next year. This has been a great trip for many families and people wanting a low cost way to make a big difference. Thank you trip members for all your hard work and efforts to get to know the kids at Cookson Hills!

Velocity Missions Trip

July 14th, 2010 by Missions Team

CU-Mission-Trip-025-150x150From June 22nd-24th there were 9 jr. high students and 2 adults who went to Champaign-Urbana to help out at a couple different ministries, including Salt & Light and Axiom’s Campus Ministry. Their challenge from Jr. High leader Chris Sandel was to come up with the best way to model Matt. 25:35-40. Here is trip member Megan Moran’s overview of the trip:

“This summer for junior high we went on a mission trip to Champaign. The first day Chris told us to come up with a way to show God’s love in the community. We split up into two groups of five kids, my group decided to make baskets of snacks for nurses in the community, and the other group decided to get candy bars and write down bible verses and pass them out to people. The second day we went to a food and clothing bank, called Salt and Light. At Salt and Light we helped out by sorting clothes, making bags of food to pass out, and just helping with anything that was needed. On the third day, we cleaned up the college dorm we were staying at, and we finished quickly. We went back to Salt and Light to help out with more sorting and separating food. I think this was a very fun trip for all of us, and I think God taught us that there is always something you can do to show God’s love.”

-Megan Moran

Thanks Velocity for making a difference in Champaign-Urbana! We are told they helped out almost 400 families on this trip! You have definitely shown us how to model Matthew 25. Be sure to check out Velocity’s website to see some fun pictures and visit the web pages of the ministries they served.

“For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me.’  Then the righteous will answer him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink?  And when did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you?  And when did we see you sick or in prison and visit you?’ And the King will answer them, ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.’”

Christmas, Mattresses, and Myanmar??

July 1st, 2010 by Missions Team

July is a big month for missions at West Side! There are multiple ministries and ages making an effort to donate what they have for people all over the world.

  • Out of the Ashes: West Side Kid’s program The Wild is raising money for a family in Myanmar who lost their home to fire this past year. Their goal is $1500, and they have already raised over $950! If you have kids coming to The Wild this is a great opportunity to get involved! Check out westsidekids.org for more information.
  • Money for Mattresses: Velocity, the Jr. High ministry at West Side will be raising money for Inner City Mission in Springfield, IL to buy new mattresses. Money for Mattresses will be a competition between the guys and girls, and will hopefully encourage both to give big! Check out Velocity’s webpage to hear more about what’s going on in this ministry.
  • Christmas in July: Every year in July Christmas trees pop up in West Side’s concourse area! Christmas is July is a gift giving program for missionary families to receive Christmas gifts in time for the holidays. Missionaries include families and individuals West Side supports all over the world. Missionaries tell us what their need is, and West Side families buy these gifts for them. Starting this Sunday you can stop by the concourse missions table to select a gift tag for a missionary family.

Thank you West Side for being so passionate about missions! It is incredible to be a part of a church that loves God and loves people. Please be in prayer for each of these ministries to give big and make a big difference in people’s lives!

Thought you would never sign up for another Book Club?

June 13th, 2010 by Missions Team

BOMBrochure.400

Ever been a part of a book club and not had the time to keep up with reading a new book every month? Literature and Teaching Ministries has a program where you are still a part of a monthly book club, but someone in another country will receive the much needed book. Here is a better description of their program:

“Hundreds of missionaries in dozens of countries need thousands of books for sincere seekers, growing Christians, and church leaders around the world. Literature And Teaching Ministries has a different kind of Book Club where you join forces with many others to provide a specific book each month.

LATM continually receives requests from missionaries and national church leaders for help to produce books in the heart languages of their fields. Every month a different book will be selected. It might be a book on Christian evidences in Russian one month, a Bible study text in Spanish the next, then a commentary in Arabic.

Here’s how the Book Club works . . .

Instead of receiving the selection of the month, you will help give the selected book each month. Your contribution and other designated gifts fund the cost of producing these books. “But what can my $15.00 do?” By itself, not much, but when you add it to 300 others, it makes a big difference! $15.00 x 300 = $4,5000

This is an excellent way to use many small gifts to make a large impact. Come join the Club! Your small candle will make a real difference in a spiritually dark world.

Determined to “bring the books,”

Phil Casey
2 Tim. 4:13

Literature and Teaching Ministries has already printed 337 book projects in 49 languages! What a great way to get involved with a creative ministry reaching out to the whole world. If you would like to be a part of this and join the monthly book club, you can sign up on their website: LATM.

Refuge Ranch Review

June 6th, 2010 by Missions Team

team

Small groups from West Side went out to Pawnee last month, and here is a response from the Refuge Ranch family:

The West Side crew was incredible! They accomplished in TWO DAYS a project that would have taken  us an entire summer to complete.  We are overwhelmed and so grateful for the generous hearts who gave their time to invest in what God is doing on this little 4 acre piece of ground.  The Body of Christ never ceases to amaze me!  Pray with us that God will use every bit of this place. . . the setting, the horses, the volunteers. . . to communicate His unfailing love to hurting children and families who do not yet know Him.

With all our hearts, thank you!”

Rising Waters in Poland

May 24th, 2010 by Missions Team

DSC_0666

We recently recieved an update from Proem, the camp in Poland many West Siders have visited in the last few years. This part of Poland has had a lot of flooding in the last week, here is the email from Proem:

“Rising waters have spilled over the banks of many rivers in Poland. Many in southern Poland are stranded as only the roofs of their homes stand visible. The basketball courts, fish-huts, new soccer field, and campfire pit are all under water as I write. The situation will continue to worsen as water is released from a nearby dam this afternoon. Please pray for those without homes in Poland. Please pray that damage will be minimal at the campground. We pray that we might soon be back to serving God and people from the most beautiful camp in Poland. Thank you for your thoughts and prayers. . . ”

Missions Team Member Interview

May 13th, 2010 by Missions Team

Have you ever thought, who is actually on the Missions Team? How does West Side choose who to support? We took some time to interview a team member, and hopefully give you a better picture of West Side Missions!

Barb Sachtleben is one of the members of the Missions Team at West Side. She has been serving for several years and has led the Poland trip for the past few years as well.

Why are missions important to the church?

First of all, Jesus’ followers were commanded to go, teach, baptize, and teach…He told the apostles to go “into all the world”…so if the church is to be obedient to Jesus, missions–or reaching others with the Gospel–is important.  Also, just as thinking of others before ourselves is a blessing for individuals, I believe that is also true for the church.  While not everyone is able to be “on the field”, the various trips WSCC has sponsored and the Christmas in July program are great ways to offer people first-hand experience in the importance of missions.

How much does West Side give away every year?

Unfortunately, I don’t have that number memorized and it is not at hand just now.  However, the Board of Elders made a decision some years ago that the missions budget should be at least 10% of the total church budget.  In addition to the $$ for which the missions team is responsible, there is another fund called New Horizons that is also used in supporting missions.  AND there is support from ABFs, small groups, summer VBS, and individuals, including many who are supporting children in Nairobi because of the Christmas emphasis a couple years ago.

How do you choose who to support?

That is so difficult!  There are so many ministries that are doing great things in order to share the Gospel around the world.  When we add a new mission to our support list, we try to look at any connection there may already be to WSCC.  We also choose mostly to support works that are part of our particular “brotherhood” of churches.  In addition, we want to support works around the world, on as many continents as possible.  We also want to be as good stewards as possible with the $$ God has given to WSCC, so we try to stay informed about what is being accomplished in the various missions so that we know the $$ is being well invested.  All of those considerations are wrapped in prayer for guidance in our decisions.

Why do you serve on the Missions Team?

I was blessed to have grown up in a home and home church in which missions were important, so it has also become important to me.  I just believe supporting missions is important for the church as well as for the individual and have been blessed to have had personal connections with missions in my life.

Where is one place you have served?

One of the mission ministries that I came to know growing up was Good News Productions, Int’l., based in Joplin, MO.  For the last 20+ years I have attended their annual banquet and Advisory Council meeting, and in 2009 I was privileged to be asked to serve on their Board of Directors.

Which West Side mission trip has been your favorite? Why?

Although I have known about numerous missions over the years, the one mission trip in which I have participated has been the trip to Poland to assist in a week of camp.  Since it’s the trip I know personally, it would have to be my “favorite”.  But I believe WSCC people have been given opportunities to participate in some great mission trips, and for anyone who does participate, THAT trip becomes the favorite! :-)

Thanks Barb for your continued service to the West Side Missions Team! Please pray for our missions team that they would be wise decision makers and good stewards with God’s many blessings!
